Fishkeeping Made Simple

Overview

Tools Used:

Figma | Photoshop | Illustrator

Aquabuddy is a mobile app created to make fishkeeping easier and more responsible for beginners. Working in a pet store, I often see newcomers struggle with mixed advice and a lack of clear guidance. This project aims to simplify the hobby through an intuitive digital experience that teaches essential care and encourages responsible fishkeeping.

Problem:
Many new fishkeepers struggle to maintain a balanced aquarium due to scattered information, conflicting advice, and a lack of clear guidance. This often leads to poor fish health, wasted money, and frustration that can discourage long-term engagement in the hobby.

Goal:

Design a mobile experience that helps beginner fishkeepers understand what’s happening in their tank and confidently know what to do next

Research & insights

Observing beginner aquarists in person uncovered three key challenges:

Information Overload:

Many fish-keeping apps overwhelm beginners with complex technical information, making it difficult to determine what factors are actually important for keeping a tank healthy.

01

Numbers Need Context:‍ For a beginner,  pH, KH, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and chlorine are useless on their own. Users must understand the importance of a reading for their tank and know what to do next. ‍

02

Beginners Need Confidence, Not Just Information: New fishkeepers are often worried about making mistakes that could harm their fish. Aquabuddy gives users assurance, explanations, and practical recommendations to help them feel confident managing their aquariums.
